History
Joseph Malcarne comes from a lineage of talented craftsmen. Ever been to Gillette’s Castle in East Haddam, CT? If not, it is a great place to visit. The point is, Joseph’s great-grandfather was responsible for the amazing woodworking in this castle that was once owned by William Gillette. It has some very intriguing carved door latches and locks! At the young age of 13, Joseph had the skill and determination to accomplish almost any project; he built railroad tie walls, brick walks and driveways, stone patios and more. Before long, he managed the projects himself and directed a team of workers several years his senior. Joseph opened Malcarne Contracting on April 26th, 1996. Starting with renovation projects, the company grew to handle increasingly complex projects, including all phases of renovation, additions, gut rehabs, modulars, and new construction. Today, Malcarne Contracting is one of the largest construction companies in the Hudson Valley. Joseph loves working with people and infuses Malcarne Contracting with a work ethic that is tried and true and is what we now think of as “old-fashioned values”. We are the way it used to be… but better!

I think back to our conversation in January of this year in regards to heat pumps. At the time, I was watching Ask This Old House. They were showing Dandelion Energy installing a geothermal system. I did sign a contract with them. Hyde Park wanted the DEC to get involved, before they issued a permit, because my property contains wetlands. Then covid shuts everything down. Blessing in disguise. After waiting 7 months, they let me out of my contract.
Then I thought of our conversation, and called ComfortTECH. Tony was very knowledgeable, informative and not pushy.
I’m glad I went with the heat pump! My house has never been as comfortable and warm as it is with the heat pump! I am blown away.
My sister made a comment that the southern siblings, when they visit, won’t have to pack their winter jackets to wear IN the house. First I heard about that! Little did I know, I wouldn’t be wearing mine either!
It’s so quiet and the air coming through the vents is so gentle. I never know when it’s on. I was able to get rid of my air deflectors. One of the things that bugged me about the old oil system, it was loud. It would be warm and then cool down very quickly and the cycle would start over again.
I was using my fireplace to supplement my heat. Now I use it occasionally for ambience. I like the fact that I no longer have two 330 gallon oil tanks and oil sitting in the basement. I always had a fear of walking into the basement flooded with oil! No more! I also like the Nexia app, lots of data to digest for this retired software engineer.
Tony was on top of everything. He communicated things to me in a timely professional manner. I never had to wonder about anything. He made me feel like I was his only client. I’m sure he had many things going on but he never conveyed that. He was very easy to deal with and talk to. He made this process painless.
Matt and Damien are knowledgeable at what they do. They answered my many questions during the installation and didn’t mind me watching on occasion. I like to know how things work. They also kept the work area very clean and tidy. They were very careful to ensure no black soot escaped into the basement while removing the old equipment and exhaust pipe.
I am so glad I switched from oil to heat pump, and that Malcarne could install it for me. I can trust in your company wholeheartedly to do the best job and not take advantage of me as a woman. Man, do I have stories!
Thank you Joseph! I wanted to wish you, your family and employees a Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas and a Happy Healthy Pro$perou$ New Year!

The best contractor we’ve ever worked with. Period.
My wife and I recently purchased a mid-1940s colonial home in Beacon. It is our first home, so we learned a lot about heating deficiencies the first winter. The home was running on oil, with a boiler greater than 40 years old, powering a one-way steam system — without wall or attic insulation, and with many gaps/drafts. All of this combined was costing a small fortune to operate!
We started calling contractors immediately, from all over the Hudson Valley; each one with a different solution, cost and ability to do the job. Each one of those contractors was ruled out, as my wife and I asked tougher questions about their proposals. Additionally, I’m an environmental engineer, and wished to move from oil to centralized electricity, so I can purchase renewable energy. Essentially, my wife and I wanted a heat pump system.
Whole (drafty) home heat pump designs are difficult, and that’s where Malcarne comes in. Up front, they (including Joseph and John) spent 5 hours over two days with us at our home, discussing the possibilities and the heat transfer weaknesses of our home. From there, they modeled our home with a heat pump system. We were told what to do in the attic, basement, and around the home in order to reduce heat stack effect — all required before they were comfortable with a heat pump solution. We did exactly what they said, and after they modeled our home the second time, they were comfortable proceeding with our project.
Now, if you’re like us, you might not have the funding for a heat system overhaul on-hand. Well, Malcarne is an approved contractor in NYSERDA’s loan programs, so we were able to fund the project with a long-term low interest loan!
During the work, the entire crew (Fernando, Sean, and John) took their time. Every move cleaned-up. They literally leave no trace in your home. They’re also a really great group of people, and we enjoyed their company. After the work was complete, they wanted to ensure our comfort, and came back several times to tweak programming in the system — to optimize both comfort and efficiency. We also keep an open line of communication to discuss system performance on especially cold nights/days (Polar Vortex).
The system is running AWESOME! It’s quiet, and keeps a wonderful even heat across the entire home. And the best part: we’re saving a considerable amount of money, compared to our old system — more than the NYSERDA loan payment! Plus, we’ll have central air conditioning this coming summer.
So yes, again, the best contractor we’ve ever worked with. Period.

I am very pleased with the work performed at our home by Malcarne Construction. The end result is of excellent workmanship. Nevien is a wonderful person to work with. She has always been very helpful with the planning of our project and the scheduling to get things done. Any issue brought up has been cheerfully addressed. I highly recommend this company. When choosing Malcarne Construction, you are hiring a company, not a handyman.

We hired Joseph for a major renovation of our home, and could not have been happier with his professionalism, accountability and helpfulness – and with the quality of his work. His partnership with architect Nevien Sidarous results in the highest quality craftsmanship – and brilliant design work. Since that first major job we have used Joseph and Nevien again and again, and have never been dissatisfied.

We hired Malcarne Const. to update our very dated bathroom. We found the design ideas on Houzz and Malcarne Const was able to deliver a beautiful bathroom within the budget and timeline we were expecting. We had one small problem with grout and they had a workman come out that day to resolve the issue. Everyone we worked with was professional and courteous. I was nervous about having strangers in the house with our young son, but there were no issues whatsoever. I would hire them again, without hesitation, for any other improvements that the house needs.

Malcarne Contracting built a childcare room and a stage for my Aerobics studio quickly and efficiently! The workers were very thorough and everyone was a pleasant and professional. Even though it was a drive for them, they got the work done in two days with no complaints! They even stuck around to help put in my aerobic flooring! Great company, great people, great service. I highly recommend them!
